In order to attain a high quality of life in future, not only in industrialised countries, resources need to be conserved without this having serious repercussions on the environment. Our actions must therefore be directed at sustainability. Reducing the consumption of resources and the volume of emissions is certainly one of the most urgent tasks facing society today.
With this in mind, there are vast quantities of carbonaceous residues across the world in the form of wastes and biomasses. Exploiting the calorific value contained in these residues can provide an alternative source of energy whilst at the same time reducing the use of primary, fossil resources (such as oil, coal and natural gas) and minimising non-utilisable waste.
